What this was
From 2013 to 2019, the organization ran a recurring open mic series creating a consistent space for people living with mental health conditions to share their experiences through performance. It started as A Stand Up Mind in 2013 — stand-up comedians speaking from personal experience about mental health. It evolved into Open Mic Open Minds in 2014, opening the format to any medium. By 2017 it had found its name and its rhythm: Leave it at the Mic. Monthly. Any format. Any person with a story to tell. Seven years of showing up because the need never went away.

Already signed up – Share excerpts from a book-in-progress about their journey, doodles, text messages of poetry to a friend while in crisis, research into famous people with mental health conditions, etc. Come share or come listen, come with an open mind and an open heart.
This is to continue the dialogue started in 2013’s 6-month theatrical production of “Normal Like Us – The Depression Chronicles,” and the StandUp Mind series (standup comedy around mental health).
Creative Outlets. Mental Health.
An open mic format where we share how we use creative outlets in dealing with mental health conditions including depression, bipolar, ADD, PTSD, anxiety and others. From the folks who brought you the theatrical show, “Normal Like Us – The Depression Chronicles” last year (a show by and about artists living with mental health conditions), we are continuing our commitment to create a space for dialogue about mental health.
Come share or just listen, but do so with an open mind and an open heart.
If you are interested in sharing, please let us know ahead of time by emailing us, or you can just show up and sign up. You can read a poem you wrote, or share doodles, or share story about some artist who inspired you. If you wrote something but prefer someone else to read / perform it, please let us know ahead of time so we can arrange actors for you.

The Mind Me Series
We continue the Open Mic. Open Minds. Mental Health Series with this “Journey Through Time” Edition. The general theme is dealing with the illness over time. The cycles, the good years, the bad years, the bad, bad years, however you interpret the theme. In light of the world’s recent loss in Robin Williams, please also feel free to use this night to process that tragedy and how it affected you.
As always, this is an open mic format where Austinites share how we use creative outlets in dealing with mental health conditions including depression, bipolar, ADD, PTSD, anxiety and others.

The theme for this upcoming Leave It At The Mic is “Loving Someone.”
