Lucky Chaos Crowd (2017—2020)

What this was

From 2017 to 2020, Lucky Chaos Crowd was a monthly community gathering built around local diverse artists and restaurants — and designed for people who wanted to show up more but didn’t know how. Not the once-a-year cultural event. Regular. Normal. On the same list as anything else you might do on a Saturday night.

Each event was structured as a tour. A guide with a personal connection to the culture being spotlighted led the group through dinner at an independent restaurant, then to a show aligned with the org’s mission. The restaurant came first on purpose: everyone eats out, and having someone who grew up with the food — who can explain the menu, the seating, what to order — makes walking through an unfamiliar door feel less like a risk and more like going somewhere with a friend. The show followed naturally from there. Where most of Lucky Chaos’ work focused on who was on the stage, Crowd focused on who was in the room — and on making it easier to be there, again and again.

June’s Lucky Chaos Crowd

Lucky Chaos’s mission is to illuminate the expression of under-represented people through art and storytelling as well as build a community of support within Austin. Right now, our team believes one thing we can do in solidarity to dismantle racism is to amplify and support Black artists and businesses in this city.

We are thrilled that the profoundly well-crafted and beautifully acted play, Underground, will be streaming live this Saturday. In 2017, we witnessed this incredible performance live at the Vortex. It holds such power and relevance about the complexity of how to achieve true justice and freedom in an anti-Black system.

https://www.facebook.com/events/204729800650984

Before the streaming, we plan to have dinner together on zoom. We ask everyone who joins to select one of the many Black-owned restaurants in greater Austin to order food from and enjoy.

Here is an extensive list of Black-owned restaurants :

https://www.austinchronicle.com/…/support-black-owned…

We will share the zoom link Saturday afternoon for those who plan to attend the virtual dinner before the show.
