Groundwork is a recurring works-in-progress showcase. A space for diverse artists — especially artists of color — to experiment, take risks, get feedback, and support each other. Not a finished production. Not a showcase of polished work. A room where the work gets made.

Who it’s for

Any artist working in performance — theater, spoken word, film, music, movement, comedy. Artists of color are especially welcome. You can perform a work in progress, do a script reading, show a film, or just show up and watch. Everyone gets a feedback form. Artists who want feedback get it. Artists who don’t, don’t have to.

Why we keep doing it

Diverse artists — particularly artists of color — don’t always have access to supportive spaces to develop work. Groundwork exists because that need doesn’t go away. We’ve been showing up consistently since 2017 because consistency is the point. A space that appears once is an event. A space that keeps appearing is a promise.

A note on documentation

We don’t photograph Groundwork extensively. A space where artists take risks needs to feel safe, not observed. What we can tell you is that it happened — consistently, over many years, with hundreds of artists. That’s the record we’re most proud of.

The record

Groundwork has run since 2017. Over 20 evenings. Artists of every background and skill level. Works that went on to become full productions. Artists who performed for the first time. A community that kept coming back.
