What this was
From 2017 to 2020, Groundwork — Artists Taking Risks — was a recurring works-in-progress showcase for diverse artists, especially artists of color. The name said what the room was for: trying something that might not work yet. That kind of experimentation is harder than it sounds when most available spaces belong to someone else. Artists of color often have to mask in rooms not built for them — which means the work that reaches the public is already pre-filtered, already safer. Groundwork was the room before that room. A place to bring what wasn’t finished, get real feedback, and keep moving the idea forward. It ran because the need for that space didn’t go away — and because being in a room full of people who already know how hard it is changes what’s possible.

Do the work, show the work!
Performance art, script readings, films, sketches, scene work-shopping, and anything else that will not damage the stage, or hurt you or others. You can choose to receive written feedback by the audience, or hold a quick Q&A after your piece to get live feedback. We generally limit each act to about 15 minutes, but that’s always negotiable depending on number of acts for that evening.
Not performing? Come watch, support, give feedback, hug-an-artist, or just be in a space of creativity and risk taking. Everyone gets a program of the evening’s acts including a space for written feedback for each artist/act. We collect the programs at the end of the event. If an artist/act has requested feedback, we will forward the feedback on.
(Actors are always needed for script readings.)
Admission is $10 suggested donation to help us pay for space, lights, and concessions. No reservations needed, just show up.
Featuring works in progress by Lucky Chaos company members, and other artists. Sign up!
